Because you have spent 60+ years driving, it's never occurred to you
that any thing else can be done with the time - it's driving time.

I rarely drive and when I do, not only do I get frustrated with the
traffic, I find my I can't read, play with my phone, read emails, make
snarky comments on TDU, etc, etc. Time behind the wheel of a car is dead
time.

It's just the people who have spend a life time driving know no other way.

Last week I hired a ute to go to a site at Penrith where I had to pick
something up. 140km and much frustration later, I'm reminded why I don't
own a car and usually get the train.

The resulting fuel bill for the ute was at least twice what the
bus/train fare would have been from my place to the site I visited. (But
I wouldn't have been able to bring back 7 crates of documents on the bus).

One key reason why younger people are driving less is that they have
grown up grafted to their mobile phones and when they find driving
requires putting down the phone and being 'out of contact' with their
online world, the whole idea of driving doesn't seem so attractive. They
will catch the bus so they can continue to be 'connected' to their
electronic world.
