Correct on all accounts Brian - and just when I thought that I had finally
come-up with one that would keep everyone guessing for a few days !
One of the clues that was intended to be offered was that the statement
about this being the last piece of cable track constructed is technically
wrong !
Initially, both the of lines in Lonsdale Street (that from Russell Street
AND that from Elizabeth Street ) turned South into Swanston Street; with
the electrification of Swanston Street in 1926, the two sections of cable
track in Lonsdale Street were connected to each other directly, and a cable
track-electric track crossing square constructed.
Was this the last piece of cable track constructed ?
Or was the Market Street-Flinders Street crossing square involve
reconstructing that particular section of cable tramway ?
