Without political comment, here are the track records (pun intended) of
some key Victorian Premiers:

John Cain (senior) [electorate - Northcote]
Labor Premier December 1952 to June 1955
(NB: First majority Labor government in Victoria)

1954: tramline extended from Gordon Street to West Maribyrnong, linking the
isolated Footscray tramways to the main system
1955: Bourke Street to Northcote electric tramway opened
tramcars 970 (?) to 1070 authorised to be constructed

Sir Henry Bolte [electorate - Hampden]
Liberal Premier June 1955 to August 1972
(NB: The Victorian State Liberal Party was officially known as the 'Liberal
and Country Party' from 1949 to 1965, but was NOT a Liberal-Country Party
coalition)

1956: Geelong tramways closed
1960: Point Ormond tramline closed
1962: Footscray tramlines closed
1971: Ballarat tramways closed
1972: Bendigo tramways closed

Authority to build tramcars 1041 to 1070 withdrawn
Numerous tramcars withdrawn and/or scrapped without replacement

Sir Rupert Hamer [electorate - Kew]
Liberal Premier August 1972 to June 1981

1978: tramline extended to East Burwood
tramcars 1 to 230 and 1041 authorised to be constructed

John Cain (junior) [electorate - Bundoora]
Labor Premier April 1982 to August 1990

1983, 1985, 1987: tramline extended to Bundoora (in three stages)
tramcars 231 to 300 and 2001 to 2132 authorised to be constructed
