A puzzle for you ?
  Dean Filgate

Inspired by the recent mention of tracks being dug-up in Russell and
Lonsdale Streets -

The last section of cable tramway to be built in Australia (and most
probably the world) was laid in Lonsdale Street between Swanston and
Elizabeth Streets in 1924, and remained in use until 1939.

A particular technical aspect of the operation of this (and only this)
piece of cable tramway was unique - what was it ?

Clues might be given, but only if you have a good guess (and ask nicely !)
