Any signal engineer who allowed green signals to be displayed in
conflicting directions should be 'discharged from the service'.

According to Ch 9 news last night, the guy who rescued the truck driver was
following the truck, and he said the truck had the green light, so how would
passengers on the tram see that the tram had the green light??

The Age is running with a story of a possible traffic light fault which
showed both directions as green.
I would consider that highly unlikely.

The crossing is also a popular bicycle path - and that probably means plenty
of witnesses at 8am.
I think the police will be able to do their job reasonably easily.

As a matter of interest, here's a view looking west towards the crossing -
the direction from which the truck approached the scene.

As you can see, there is a curve and a couple of standard diamond traffic
signal ahead signs.
The tram in the pic is 2028 - after it had been re-railed and pulled back
from the point of impact.

Mal Rowe - tipping that those diamond signs are likely to be replaced with
something more attention grabbing.
