The safest route for an out of control train from the Moss Vale line, could be along the main line towards the former Coniston junction near Wollongong.

Back in the thirties, Coniston Junction had one of the first relay interlockings in NSW.

I wonder if the train took the turnout curve from the main line to the inner harbour at 120 km/h - probably not I guess, otherwise the news would be different! Before they built the flyover at Princes Hwy, such events would have provided a hair-raising experience for motorists at the level crossing.
