Woman trapped by leg at tram stop outside The Alfred hospital in Prahran .
Emergency services are working to free a woman whose leg is trapped between
a tram and a platform on Wednesday morning.
Paramedics confirmed they were called about 7.30 to the incident at the
platform outside The Alfred hospital on Commercial Road in Prahran.
An MFB pumper, rescue unit and commander are also on the scene in addition
to a Yarra Trams rescue team.
Fire crews were called at 7.41 and have been using appliances "for some
time" to rescue the woman, an MFB controller confirmed.
Route 72 trams are diverting via Dandenong and Glenferrie roads in both
directions.

Tram trap:
7.57 There is a lot of trouble on route 72 trams this morning with trams
diverting via Dandenong and Glenferrie roads. A woman's leg is trapped
between a tram and the platform in Commercial Road, Prahran, near the
Alfred. She had fallen. Ambulance Victoria was called to the scene at
7.30. Passengers should consider an alternative, such as bus routes 216,
219 or 220, to connect with trams.
Yarra Trams says its information so far on the woman and Commercial Road
tram is that she fell. We are getting more details on the route 72 delays
shortly.
8.39 The woman whose leg was trapped between the platform and the tram has
been freed.
The woman is believed to have slipped in the wet conditions on the route 72
tram platform on Commercial Road outside The Alfred hospital.
She was trapped for about 45 minutes and Yarra Trams crews had to jack up
the tram slightly in order to free her leg.
"It (the jack) is part of the normal crew equipment but we had to be
extremely careful to the passenger," Mr Murphy said.
The woman was given shelter and pain relief "straightaway" after the
incident while crews worked to free her.
"She has been in the care of medical staff since it happened, in that sense
the location was fortunate," he said.
He said trams would continue to divert but would resume down Commercial Road
soon. Trams have diverted from Burke Road and turn into Malvern Road and now
going via Dandenong Road and looping back to St Kilda Road. It's a long
journey.
8.51 Route 72 towards Melbourne University have resumed following the
earlier disruption. Trams towards Camberwell are still diverting.
8.54 Route 72 trams in both directions have now resumed following the
earlier disruption.
9.05 Ambulance Victoria has issued a statement on the woman whose leg was
trapped between the tram and the platform on Commercial Road, Prahran.
The woman is aged in her 50s and is being treated for her leg injury. She is
in a stable condition.
Yarra Trams says trams are now travelling along their regular route on
Commercial Road.

MOST Melburnians are waking up to a wet morning with heavy rain, hail and
thunderstorms forecast for the remainder of today.
The Bureau of Meterology has issued a severe weather warning across Victoria
for damaging winds as the wild weather continues.
The underpass at Blackburn station is flooded, leaving citybound trains
unable to stop there.
Trains are also bypassing Burnley because of flooding in the station subway.
And drivers are being warned to take care on the roads this morning.
Parts of Warrigal Rd in Ashburton have flooded causing traffic delays while
outbound traffic on the Tullamarine freeway remains heavy.

A strong cold front that hit Victoria's west coast late on Tuesday night is
responsible for the wild weather that has seen heavy rain over the past 24
hours across Melbourne.
A SES spokesman said that more than 170 calls for help had been received in
that time across Victoria, 70 of those in Melbourne.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron said southern suburbs
were hit hardest by the overnight deluge.
"The heaviest falls were in Oakleigh South with 57mm, Blackburn saw 53mm
while Burwood saw 47mm," he said.
The bureau says damaging winds, averaging 60-70km/h with peak gusts up to
90km/h are possible for parts of southern Victoria. Melbourne could also get
hail.
