Correct Graham!

And here's some close up images, one of which also shows a remnant of the wooden cap (mostly removed by the contractor I think) , which made up the "wooden tomb" as described earlier. Not sure yet how the rollers were serviced!

The Alan Bellamy photo also attached provides a further clue about the whole arrangement which nobody has quite nailed.

It looks more like rodding. If thats the case its the interlocking rodding for the tramway catch points as seen in the second photo.
