Greg with "Lever channel for catch points on the tramway?" and Matthew are just about there. If you enlarge the first photo on screen you may spot it's not just the pulley (roller) in the channel.

There is a pulley in that channel - so it held a moving cable.

The 2nd photo posted of the tram in Riccarton Road shows a mechanical semaphore signal.
I can also see what looks like a railway signal box.

My guess is it's the channel that held the cable(s) that operated the semaphore signal(s).
Being a suburban street would mean the signal wires would have had to be concealed out of the way of both road and pedestrian traffic.

Presumably the (flashing?) lights and bell were for the motorists and it was thought the trams needed a railway style semaphore further out to warn them that the railway was 'in use'. That mechanical semaphore had to be connected back to the signal box some how.
