RE: Riccarton Rd Christchurch
  Hinman, Dave

Hi Bob and all

I have changed the subject heading as the previous one seems to have created issues with Outlook and fears of scamming. For those who couldn't/wouldn't open the previous two posts, here's my originally posted photo again (renamed), plus an early 1950s Graham Stewart image of a tram in Riccarton Rd - Clue no. 3. See below for the story so far.

Dave in ChCh, still learning about how the trams operated in this former GTOTSINZ and how Yahoo operates in 2017.

No Bob, though these ideas crossed our minds - another clue - it was described by those who found it as " It is located above and slightly offset from the wastewater trunk and located in a "timber tomb".

Dave in ChCh, where not much still survives of our early 20th century tramway system

Hi Dave and all,
Was this to do with drainage for the tram lines?

OR, was it the trench for the tram power supply or -ve return?

Sticking to the cable car theme, I was asked last Friday to have a look at a post-earthquake excavation in Riccarton Road where the contractor (installing a new sewer line) had discovered what they thought might be old tram infrastructure with a helpful comment from a Council colleague "it does look a bit cable car related" Of course Christchurch never did have cable cars, but this was found along the centre line of Riccarton Rd which until 1953 had double track tram lines in this part of the street. The tram lines are long gone, but this trench (?) is still there and GPR (ground penetrating radar) suggests that there is more to be exposed.

SO what is it? Clue - the main north railway line crosses Riccarton Rd in the very near vicinity. (No response please from those in ChCh who have been discussing this over the last couple of days).

Dave in ChCh, surprised to discover this and who has some more photos to show if more clues are needed.
