I'm only a week away from being retired twelve years and have no idea of present Company policy.
Can remember attending a meeting about rosters soon after the C.G.E.A. takeover when the new Deputy GM proudly announced that the Lilyfield extension was a goer.  I used the moment to point out that the old tramway terminus had a toilet block for the use of tram crews.
When Star City opened the toilets on the tram line level were kept open and frequently cleaned 24/7.  Later they were closed at night but left un-cleaned.  The casino issued six toilet keys to SLR, but with seven cars some nights you had the set missing a toilet key.
My preference was the casino loos (and unlock and use the handicapped booth for added safety) as at Central the only option was the public loos.  I'd call the DOC before leaving the tram.  "I'm going to check the plumbing", the Aussie Italian lad had never heard that nick name before and for months would remind me of the call.  If on the graveyard shift with a male conductor under John Street overbridge was as good as anywhere.

  In all the times I have caught a tram from Central, it has unloaded and straight away moved into the pick up zone and waited there; I have not seen drivers leaving the tram. . Maybe that has just been coincidence. My comment about not being allowed to leave was an enquiry about company policy, maybe Ted can clarify.

I thought only bus drivers were sadistic and left passengers standing exposed to the weather while they hid inside the bus 20 metres from the stop. Admittedly that is not so much a problem at Central.

The penny has dropped into my head (because i didn't see the new timetable until today) that the reason for the new separate set down and pick up stops at Central is because they have made it the layover terminus, not because of crowd conflict. This is typical on loop termini. The tram drops at one platform, then closes the doors and lays up until departure time when it moves forward to the departure platform (or it may move forward anyway).

It's not possible at Central because the railway station is at the top of the loop, but typically the drop off and pick up platforms are at the throat of the loop so as to enable several trams to be received and held between the stops. At Central if another tram turns up, the first tram has to move forward to the departure stop where it still has some scope for continuing its layup. Loop science 101 and good to see they're starting to understand it.

So this leaves Dulwich Hill solely to handle the mad panic reverse without being complicated by mandatory layovers and toilet breaks. It still needs that extra track though.
