The New South Head Rd bus services are but a pale shadow of the former tram service which had average headways down to about 45 seconds, which made a short-working shunt on the running line a fraught and disruptive business. But because of the topography etc it was not really possible to get off-line turning.
Buses don't so much "short shunt" as leave the main corridor to provide a direct service to various adjacent areas, I guess an advantage that the trams didn't have.
