But the replacement buses have no short workings, as far as I know.

Over here in Wellington, when I first lived in this city in the late 1970s, a number of the still-existing trolley bus routes had regular turnbacks, eg Berhampore on the Island Bay route. All went over the years, with all services running all the way to the terminus. The last such turnback was Brooklyn on the Kingston route, where the turning wires were removed about three years ago.
