But would they be allowed to leave the tram at Central to wander inside for quick relief?

On the last tram to Wallsend, Newcastle in 1949, the driver and conductor ‘wandered off home’ for several hours’ rest . They made sure that the tram LP 316 would not be hijacked by the enthusiasts by making sure to take the “driving tools” home with them.

Here they are soon after dawn at Wallsend tram terminus. The driver and conductor have returned from their homes with the “driving tools” and pose for a photograph with the fans

who have spent the night on the “timber padded” seats of the tram.

I recently suggested a re-enactment of the ‘last tram’ at the STM National Park terminus, but that idea was ‘shot down in flames’ because most prospective participants claimed to be ‘too old’ to sleep on tram seats.

I used to time the turnaround af Lilyfield Greg. The fastest time I recorded for a tram to be reversed was 2 1/4 minutes (female driver of course!). So how long did those crews on the old system take? Obviously long enough to hold up three trams in that photographed example - but more than 2 1/4 minutes? The IWLR timetable allows 3 minutes at Dulwich Hill.

Actually a significant change from previous timetables is that the layovers are now at Central as they've obviously realised that Dulwich Hill can't handle it. Not to mention drivers not getting practical toilet time at Dulwich Hill.
