Re: Construction, CSELR.

Hi Noel,

It has a 21” wheel on the front and an 18” on the back, mainly because I like the look of the tall narrow wheel on the front. When it was new it would have had 19” rims on the front and back, 3” wide tyre on the front (as is the 21” now) and a 3.5” or 4” wide rear tyre. It now has a 4” wide rear tyre. Larger diameter wheels roll over bumps more smoothly than small wheels, and the forks have about 3” of movement. The rear end is rigid, with suspension by the springs under the saddle, fairly typical for bikes until the early fifties - it was made in 1951, but it's substantially customised compared to how it looked when new.

My other Triumph, made in 1967, still has the factory fitted rims, 19” front, 18” rear, with a 3.25” front tyre and 4” rear tyre. It has about 4” front fork deflection, and a swinging fork on the back with about 3” movement on the rear shock absorbers.

Cheers,

Tony G
