RE: Man injured by detached hatch after Sydney train fire at Burwood Station
  Noel Reed

Concerning yesterday's Burwood incident involving the power of the railway
electrical system causing damage to a train and injury to passengers, I was
involved during my railway signalling work with two such incidents -

1. 1500 volts DC from railway traction power at a level crossing came
accidentally in contact with railway signal cables.

Result ---A major signal box relay room was completely burned out, resulting
in extensive delays while the signalling was rebuilt.

2. An electric train power fault resulted in the overheating and sagging of
1500 volts DC overhead wiring into contact with the roof of an unrelated
double deck electric train carriage.

Result - Many peak hour commuters were burned and injured by the resultant
arcing of DC power into the roof of the carriage.

How refreshing to hear the CEO explaining what had happened - and showing
some knowledge of the technical issues.

How disappointing to hear the political opposition in NSW trying to blame
their political opponents.

Mal Rowe - who is sick of both sides of politics using every incident to
push their message rather than argue for good outcomes
