Re: A sight not often seen on the IWLR these days

Hi Bob

These are two aspect position light signals. The indication on this one, at the Sydney end of the inbound Taverners Hill platform, is showing Clear. As it is a Permissive signal, when at Danger it shows a red light bottom left and the white marker light on the right, which allows the tram to pass but warns the driver there’s a car ahead in the block.

The Absolute signals at interlocked points (all turnouts on the running lines) show the diagonal whites aspect shown here for Clear, but only show the red at Danger, requiring the tram to wait till it clears. At Wentworth Park and Lewisham West there are fixed red Limit Of Shunt signals on the inbound line marking the point outbound terminating cars on the wrong road can’t pass (facing crossovers put terminating cars on the inbound), and also at Lilyfield on the outbound line, at the City end of the platform, for trams running out of the stabling road at Lilyfield. Signals at facing turnouts also have stencil route indicators to describe the route selected, as well as Clear and Danger.

At the Depot Junction at Ultimo, Limit Of Shunt boards are used to control wrong road moves rather than fixed red signals. These signal heads are the same as used for dwarf shunting, yard and position light repeater signals on NSW railways. Back in 1997, before the line opened to Wentworth Park the signals were mounted at ground level, but sighting issues required them to be raised to the height shown before the line opened. Also, the original signal heads used between Darling Drive and Wentworth Park had incandescent lamps, but have been replaced with these LED equipped signal heads.
