RE: Loftus, New Shed
  Noel Reed

If the South Shed at Loftus is not to be used for trams which are regularly
used in traffic, would it be a better use of funds if a temporary right hand
turnout could be built for the infrequent movements in and out of the shed.

Recent pictures have shown that temporary crossovers have been recently used
in Melbourne for the 'turn back' of trams during per way alterations.

A similar (or the same) temporary turnout could also be used to shunt trams
on or off the RNP line for occasional movements of trams into the old
original tram-shed beyond the highway. In 1957, some of the original SPER
trams were moved into the old shed without the need for any points.

Several years ago, movements of surplus trams into the old shed made use of
Australian Train Movers vehicle. (See attachments by Dale Budd). The cost of
such a road transfer over a short distance could possibly have been avoided
by the use of a temporary turnout on the RNP line and the use of the AEC
Matador towing vehicle.

The primary purpose of this shed to have some where to keep the trams
that belong to SPER that are currently in Melbourne. Some of these
stored trams are operable. The infrastructure manager down there has
been trying to get Loftus to take it's trams for years, but Loftus
hasn't had any where else to put em.

The shed originally was going to be bigger, a 3 roader slightly further
south, but the council declared the 3 pine trees there to be of heritage
significance, so the shed had to be redesigned to save the trees.
