Turn it up!! It tasted like cat's p!ss. Many a time that is all that was
served on the SOP and ICD between Sydney and Melbourne. It would be enough
to turn one teetotal J

What about Resch's Dinner Ale? An excellent tasting beer. Don't know if it
was ever placarded on trams, though.

May be off topic but it cleared the air on the beer issue.

Well, at least beer, cigarettes, spirits and Vincent's powders, all popular,
if not healthy products, featured prominently in advertising on Brisbane
trams.

Thanks Mick.

Hi Ted,

Carlton Breweries took over Bulimba Breweries and their Gold Top Pale Ale
and discontinued it in the 80's.

I think it was replaced by Brisbane Bitter, now discontinued and known
colloquially up here as Brisbane River due to its awful taste.

The current VB (green death) advert is stolen from the original Gold Top ad
voiced by John Mellion in the 60's which went along the lines of:

You can get it building a house, you can get it driving a plough you can get
while you're working, matter of fact I've got it now,

A big big thirst needs a big big beer and the big big beer is Gold Top

Although this is off topic, the advertisment featured on numerous Brisbane
trams as shown in Richard and Dick's photos.

One of the original TV ads featuring local identities Dick McCann and
Bernard King is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqCqdSsPtdk which also has
a brief glimpse of a Brisbane FM tram at 1.44.

For those interested in historical trivia, Google "Bulimba Gold Top".

Cheers,

Mick in Brissie, who remembers Dad bringing home the Big Big Beer and may
have had 1 or 2 himself!

What happened to 'Gold Top'?

Gobbled up by CUB or CP?
