There is (or at least there was until we departed Melbourne in late February) still one surviving stretch of wooden block paving.

It is in Montague St South Melbourne on the Number 1 line. The tracks there must therefore date from the cable tram conversion, about 1938.

We lived near the stop there for about 15 months in 2009-10. In the really heavy storm with floods and huge hailstones in early 2010, some of the blocks were knocked out of place. We souvenired one which is on show in our living room.
