RE: September 1957 - end of the Pitt St lines - Tramway Rosette - Corner of Bent and Spring Streets Sydney 2010-03-04.jpg

Hello John and others,

Your picture was taken of the double rosettes on the former bank building on
the N-W corner of King & George Streets. The double rosettes were needed for
support of the overhead on the George St to King St curve. The tramway
signal box controlling hydraulic points in the Down George St and Up King St
tracks was on this corner.

I attach a picture of the building on the S-E corner. In cable tram days and
through the electric tram days. This building was the Belfields Hotel.--it
can be seen in the picture of 'J' 675 in King St.

The same building is now a city store for Darrell Lea Chocolates. Tramway
rosettes can be seen within the decorative blue coloured circles on both the
King St and George St frontages.

In tramway days, two colour light signals and the hydraulic point mechanism
for the Up King St line were located kerbside beneath the awning.

Noel Reed.

Hi all

I am building a group on Flickr to collect shots of remaining artefacts from
the Sydney, Newcastle, Broken Hill, and Newcastle systems -
http://www.flickr.com/groups/sydneytramwaymemories/- TDUers who are also
Flickr members may wish to avail themselves of the facility.

Attached is a pic I took this morning at the corner of King and George
Streets, Sydney.

Cheers

The R1s are standing in Spring St, having run down from Bent St, with
the Pitt St track in the foreground.

Most of the buildings in view in Spring St are now long gone, but the
sandstone edifice with the tower in the background, on the corner of
Spring, Bent and Gresham Sts, remains, as does the newest of the
Spring St Buildings.

A very few tram artifacts remain...

Cheers,

Bill
