G'day All.

Great shot once again Peter. The suburb is actually California
Gully. The pub is the White Horse, burned down in the late 90s and
has since been renovated as an Irish Pub, very popular from what I
can gather.

Behind the tram on the rise (just after the Cal Gully loop) is the
intersection of Eaglehawk Road with Thorpe Street.

The late George Sang lived two doors from the corner and Thorpe
Street was the short working terminus for the Eaglehawk school
specials. It was also the short working for trams from Charing Cross
which were timetabled to terminate at California Gully.

Looks like you took this shot from on top of one of the mullock heaps
which abounded in this vicinity back then.

The Stafford-Ellison factory in the right fore-ground is still
there, as are most of the buildings to the left of the tram. The
tram looks to be #5 or #17. My money is on #5 because of the flat
destination boxes and what appears to be the characteristic Geelong
roof additions above the drop center of the ex-Geelong cars at
Bendigo.

By the way, does anyone know what these additions were intended for
when the maximum traction cars were introduced at Geelong. Its my
guess that these were the mounts for side destination indicators
which were standard on all the Geelong single truckers. However, I
have never seen a Geelong maximum traction with side destination
indicators. To get an idea of what I am talking about look at the
drop center roof of #4 in the pic at the link below:

Really, things haven't changed all that much at Cal Gully even now!

Cheers.

P.S: better still, I have attached the pic instead.
