Evening Andrew C - All
When the TMSV had their stored trams on 1-2-3&4 roads at Malvern - I had the job of looking after them. We were able at times to move 217 for Australia day & later 180 but for Years S class 164 was locked in behind the stored w3 class - 661 was the last tram which operates now for the BTM - then when they departed again locked in with stored w2 trams. I think we worked out that 164 had been in storage longer than its operating life. When the movement of getting the stored w2 out it was decided to move 164 forward over the pit instead of sitting on a room underneath which had been the P&MTT oil room. Remember that the bottom of 1&2 roads were made up of dried out wood blocks they used in the streets & when the TMSV would wash the stored trams it would leek into those room. The Late Foreman Dick Scarffe arranged for me to move it forward after such a long time. Often we would pump 164 compressor & have it lit up but to move it - no way.
Andrew - we did just that - put the compressor on to 60lb - lights on - Linebreaker on - cut a notch & it moved foward.
The only thing - we lit up the shed like a Christmas Tree from the trolley wheel on dirty unused trolley wire & filthy track.
It then made its first run in many years to the top of the shed & returned to the bottom this time just to the end of the pits
Not a problem
